Our Capabilities:
Primary Functions
Occupational Physiology:
1. Develop physical fitness standards and programs based on occupational tasks of physically demanding jobs in the Canadian Forces.
2. The research lab supports the research teams in both field data collection and laboratory based data collection and clinical trials for the Canadian Forces. See Research Projects.
Secondary Functions
1. High Performance Sport Science
2. Occupational task testing (example: Firefighter Maintenance Standard, 5 Common Military Tasks)
3. Adapted physical activity assessment (“Soldier On”)
4. Clinical trials: validation of CF fitness training programs
5. Professional development (Certified Exercise Physiologist [CEP] skills)
Technical Tool Box:
We have the ability to measure a wide range of physiological and performance characteristics related to the physical fitness of Canadian Forces members.
We have equipment available to measure:
- energy systems and metabolic demands of physical activity, such as aerobic/anaerobic power and capacity,
- physiological responses such as heart rate, blood pressure, blood lactate, skin and core temperature, and energy expenditure,
- various performance characteristics such as muscular strength, endurance, power, flexibility and range of motion,
- anthropometric characteristics including height, weight, circumferences, body fat, and lean body mass,
- task and time-motion analysis to assess various occupations or trades.
